KHCA General Meeting: Pedestrian Safety - And What's Anybody Doing About it Anyway?

KHCA General Meeting: Pedestrian Safety - And What's Anybody Doing About it Anyway?

Speakers:

Kristy Daphnis, Chair, MoCo Pedestrian, Bike and Traffic Safety Advisory Committee
Jessica McVary, Planner Coordinator, Montgomery County
Al Carr, District 18 State Representative

Background:

Several years ago the County adopted "Vision Zero," a program devoted to reducing the number of crashes resulting in pedestrian injuries and bringing the number of serious injuries and death down to zero over time. But this year, there has been a cluster of pedestrian deaths and life-threatening injuries in the Wheaton/Glenmont/Aspen Hill area. In response, there has been an increased focus on changes that can be made to address the conditions that led to these crashes. During the KHCA General Meeting we will hear from Ms. Daphnis, Ms. McVary, and Delegate Carr who will discuss the scope of the problem, what the Vision Zero program is and what's being done to implement it at both the County and State level, starting in January.

Kristy Daphnis has also been working with a number of civic associations, including KHCA, to put together support for these changes.

This should be a fascinating and important program, and KHCA urges you all to come and see what we can do to make Vision Zero a reality for all of us. In view of the importance of this program, we have opened it up to our surrounding neighbors and hope you can join us on Wednesday evening.

Forest Buffer Cleanup

It's Earth Day — which makes it time for the annual forest buffer cleanup. KHCA and our good friends from Westfield Wheaton will be teaming up to help make the area between the Mall and KHCA sparkle. Once again, we will be gathering at Kenmont Swim Club and heading out from there to pick up all the trash we can find. We'll meet at 9:30, work for a couple hours and regroup back around noon to feast on pizzas and goodies and congratulate each other on a job well done. We'll have all the trash bags you'll need, we'd suggest you bring gloves and maybe a small rake to help reach the tricky pieces. If the younger folks get approval from their schools, we'll be happy to certify their time for SSL hours. Hope to see you all there — please sign up here so we'll know how many pizzas we'll need!

Voter Registration Drive

KHCA is teaming up with Westfield Wheaton and Indivisible Montgomery to sponsor voter registration at the Mall on April 7 and 21, from 9 to 6. We'll be set up in front of the Costco warehouse to help you register for the first time, or change your address, or verify that you are already registered. (If you do need to register, you'll need either your driver's license, an MVD ID card, or your social security number.)

This is your chance to make your voice heard by the County, the State, and the U.S. government. Don't miss out. As long as you will be 18 by November 6, you can register now.

If you'd like to help with manning the registration table to assist your neighbors in signing up, click the button below.
